Anthony Fyson and Colin Ward: Streetwork: the Exploding School
In the book Streetwork: The Exploding School. 1972, Anthony Fyson and Colin Ward advocate an immersive environmental education for school kids in order for them to have a better understanding of how cities are designed and urban space is produced. The city as an open classroom was an important aspect of this idea.
Urban Learning Resources
In order to illustrate this concept the historical examples of Patrick Geddes’s Outlook Tower in Edinburgh and outdoor Folk History Museums were used
by the authors as references from which to develop dynamic tools such as: Town Tracking, City Trails and Streetwork Centres. Learning resources
that would help children better understand how cities are made.
The Urban Archive
A central feature of this experiment was the research, recording and cataloguing of local histories, textures, building techniques, materials, people and flora and fauna. An immersive, site specific library or archive of a local experience on a granular level, that could be used by kids to have a better understanding and knowledge of the urban spaces in which they play and inhabit.
